Approach

Achieving your goals is the priority that drives our approach

Dr. Wiens has a practical and solution-focused yet thoughtful and supportive approach.  He works collaboratively with clients to identify their goals and priorities and ensures these are kept front and center.

Dr. Wiens draws primarily on principles and methods from evidence-based cognitive-behavioural (CBT) and solution-focused approaches to help clients better understand their challenges and find helpful ways to move forward.

These paradigms encompass some of the most effective and scientifically-supported principles and strategies for improving most mental health challenges, dealing with stress, and achieving goals and behavioural change.  Dr. Wiens seeks to use scientifically-proven methods and customizes these to fit the unique needs of each client.

Some examples of counselling and coaching strategies that Dr. Wiens employs include identifying patterns that hinder progress, making gradual shifts in behaviour, setting achievable and progressive goals, problem solving barriers, learning strategies to deal with anxiety and depression, as well as developing personal and professional skills (e.g., assertiveness or stress management).

Dr. Wiens encourages clients to be active in pursuing their aspirations.  He works collaboratively with them to make specific goals and plans to produce change between sessions.  These can include specific exercises or tasks designed to help gain self-awareness, increase motivation, identify barriers to problems, modify habits, develop skills, and in general change patterns of thought and behavior that may be limiting progress.

Achieving your goals is the priority.  Dr. Wiens will work together with you to clarify these and outline an action plan.  Whether it is a professional goal (e.g., career advancement) or personal goal (e.g., worry less, decrease conflict with a partner), you can expect that meetings will focus on assisting you in moving toward your desired outcomes.

Please feel free to contact Dr. Wiens if you have any questions about his approach.
